Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (info) (BMW), (English: Bavarian Motor Works) is a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. BMW is known for its performance and luxury vehicles, owns and produces the MINI brand and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. To signify the white blades cutting through the blue sky, the circular blue and white BMW logo or roundel is portrayed by BMW as the movement of an aircraft propeller. Reversed to produce the BMW roundel,the emblem evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke company logo from which the BMW Company grew.

In 1918, BMW's first significant aircraft engine was the BMW IIIa inline-six liquid-cooled engine which much preferred for its high-altitude performance. BMW 132 and BMW 801 air-cooled radial engines, the pioneering BMW 003 axial-flow turbojet, which powered the tiny, 1944-45-era jet-powered "emergency fighter", the Heinkel He 162 Salamander, were the successful WWII engine designs. For the first time when outsold Mercedes in Europe, 1992 was another year-to-be remembered for BMW. Today, the Z3, Z8 and all of the 3, 5, 7 and Motorsport series models continue the BMW tradition of building excellent automobiles.
